Ep 80: How the Fear of Success May Be Holding You Back

Be-Your-Best_Ep80.jpg

The development of our horses is dependent upon our personal development. And, personal development begins with good goal setting habits.

Setting goals is easy. It’s easy to envision where you want to be. But in order to reach these goals, we have to have a development process in mind that will accompany these goals. We have to be able to visualize where we want to go and how we are going to get there.

Sometimes, it’s not always the fear of failure that gets in our way--it’s the fear of success. As high achievers, we tend to set such big goals for ourselves that the thought of achieving them seems intimidating, overwhelming, or even unrealistic. When we get overwhelmed by our goals, we can become paralyzed by the thought of what it will take to achieve that success. That’s why we set the goal to get 1% better every day. This is a manageable, realistic goal that, over time, compounds into monumental growth.

If you find yourself feeling disappointed about where you’re at with your horsemanship journey, take a step back and look at where you are from the opposite perspective. Focus less on the results and more on the preparation. When you think about your progress toward your goals, consider the time and preparation that you have been able to dedicate toward those achievements. Oftentimes, you will find that you are further along than you think you are.

Always remember that, in the game of personal development, you will likely take a few steps backward in the midst of all the steps forward. This is why it is important to stay rooted in your goals and remember the 1% better philosophy. You don’t have to be 100% better tomorrow. Start where you are today, and practice consistency. Consistent action over time creates confidence and results.
