Ep 75: Enhancing Your Value as a Trainer

Be-Your-Best_Ep75.jpg

It took me many years to become comfortable with the idea of investing in myself.

In fact, for the better part of my early training career, I would invest in everything but myself.

I would invest in equipment, vehicles, things my family needed...but never anything for myself. The reason that I wasn’t investing in myself wasn’t because I didn’t have the time or money to do so. It was because I didn’t feel like I was worthy of the investment.

When I was able to see my own value, that’s when things began to change. I began to realize how these small investments of time and money would eventually compound into experiences that enhanced my value as a trainer.

When you make an investment of your time or money to improve your knowledge or understanding of a particular subject, that value will always find its way back to you. In the horsemanship journey, an investment in yourself equates to an investment in your horses.

When your understanding improves, you become a much more valuable asset to your horse. You put yourself in the position to develop that horse to its fullest potential because you truly understand what makes that animal tick. And, in turn, the initial investment you made in yourself not only enhances your value, but also the value of your equine partner.

As you improve your understanding of fundamental horsemanship knowledge--such as how your horses see, what their natural instincts are, why it is important to maintain proper lateral flexion and collection--these bits of knowledge will continue to add value to your training career for the rest of your life.
