Ep 269: Reflections and Gratitude During the Holiday Season

As I reflect on this year, I can’t help but think of how many opportunities we've all had to learn and grow. To each of you listening, congratulations on everything you've accomplished this year―no matter how it turned out. Whether it was a year of victories or challenges, it was another opportunity to get better. And, I know that’s what all of you did.

This morning, I was sitting down and looking at my planner, and this year, I had one word at the top of each day—discipline. I won’t lie, there were times I wasn’t as disciplined as I should have been, but even on the days when I slacked off, I kept that word at the top of my planner. It kept me focused on getting back on track. For next year, I’m adding commitment to that list. Discipline in my commitment—that’s going to be my theme for 2025. If I commit to something, I’m going to stay disciplined and stick to it, even when it’s hard.

Whether it’s preparing for Road to the Horse in March or any other goal I set, it’s about the effort I put in now. I have control over what I do in the next 90 days, and the results will take care of themselves. No matter what happens, I can live with the outcome if I stay disciplined and committed to the process.

Simple Goals for the New Year

There are a couple of simple commitments I’m making for myself in the new year. The first is dedicating 30 minutes each morning to myself—whether I spend that time praying, meditating, reflecting, or simply sitting in silence, gathering my thoughts. That quiet time is crucial for me, and I’m going to make it a non-negotiable part of my routine.

Following that, I’m committing to 30 minutes of physical activity every day. Whether it's a workout in my office, walking, or step-ups on the fence, I’m focusing on getting my body back into better shape. I’ve realized this year that riding colts is one of the best ways for me to stay physically active—riding really helps with my core strength, balance, and overall fitness. I wasn’t as consistent with riding last year, and I felt it. But this year, I’m going to stay on top of it, and I know it’ll pay off.

My goal is to do 250 sit-ups a week, and with that, I’ll build strength and endurance that will help me in the saddle. It’s simple, but if I stay disciplined and committed to doing it consistently, I know I’ll be in much better shape at the end of the year. The key is not perfection, but progress.

A Year of Challenges and Growth

Looking back at 2024, it’s been an incredible year for the western industry. The horse market is thriving, and for those of you in the cattle business, it’s been rewarding to see the hard work paying off. While the costs are high, the return is great, and it's a reminder of how important it is to invest in quality animals and training.

I’ve been so blessed to see the success of many people who’ve come through our clinics and mentorship programs. Watching them grow, improve their horsemanship, and build their businesses has been one of the most rewarding parts of my year. And the best part? They’ve taken those lessons and put them to work in ways that are truly paying off. That’s what makes this industry so great—it’s about putting in the effort, staying committed, and watching that hard work pay off over time.

Looking Ahead to 2025

As I wrap up the year and look ahead, I’m filled with excitement for the opportunities 2025 will bring. It’s not going to be without its challenges, but I’m ready for them. Challenges are what make us better. They push us to grow, to step out of our comfort zones, and that’s when the real progress happens. I’m looking forward to working with more of you in the new year and helping you take your horsemanship to the next level.
