Ep 212: Taking Responsibility for Your Success - Part 2

In this episode, we're continuing our two-part episode series about taking responsibility for your success. In this segment, I'm breaking down some topics from our recent mentorship week, including:

  • Managing expectations and timelines

  • Developing a process-oriented perspective

  • Expanding on the relationship between goals, motivation, discipline and progress

  • and more.

In case you missed Part 1 of this episode series, you can listen to it here.

Embracing Progress over Perfection

In the world of horsemanship, the pursuit of perfection can be an imperfect goal. The journey is not about flawless execution but rather the continual strides towards improvement. When we learn the acknowledge the significance of small gains, we can shift our mindset toward a more process-oriented perspective.

Process-Oriented vs. Results-Oriented Mindset

In an era of instant gratification, efficiency has become second nature. However, this efficiency often gives rise to a results-oriented mindset. In the horsemanship journey, there can be some extreme challenges posed by the desire for quick outcomes and instant gratification. That’s why we must be mindful to focus as much on the plan as we do the outcome of the plan. When we shift our mindset to focus on short term gains, the long term gains will come naturally. If we focus solely on the long term gains, the short term gains can get lost; and as a result, we can lose sight of our plan.

The Relationship Between Motivation, Discipline, Goals, & Plans

In the first episode of this series, we talked about a few fundamental mindset beliefs that have changed my horsemanship perspective:

  1. Motivation is worthless without discipline.

  2. Goals are worthless without a plan.

In this episode, I want to expand a little more on the relationship between all of these things. It takes motivation to create a goal, but then you have to have discipline to implement the plan that supports these goals. Motivation and goals alone are not enough to move the needle. You must also have discipline and a solid plan in place in order to see significant progress.

Climbing the Ladder of Success

When we reach a certain level in our horsemanship journey or with a specific horse, we often have to work just as hard to maintain the level we have reached as we did in getting to that level in the first place. Climbing higher and sustaining success demands even more effort and commitment. When you get to the top of the ladder, you have to work hard not to slide back down the ladder. Similarly, when you get to the top of the ladder, there are only so many steps left to climb. Those last few steps are always the hardest, but they are also the most rewarding.
