Ep 152: Taking Advantage of the Opportunities You Have Today

In life, there are no guarantees that the opportunities that are in front of you today will stick around forever. So, how are you preparing yourself to take advantage of the opportunities that you have right now? For me, the foundation of my preparation is seeking out mentorship.

The reason I am such a big believer in mentorship is because, regardless of what I am doing, I know there is someone out there who can do it better than me. I want to surround myself with people who are experts in what they do. Those are the people I want to have in my corner, watching my every move, and picking out those few small changes that I can make to better prepare myself to capitalize on the opportunities that are presented to me.

One such opportunity that I have been preparing for lately is the World Series of Team Roping Finals in Las Vegas this fall. My son, Wade, and I are entered in this roping, and it is an event where you have the opportunity to win well over $100,000 per man. Needless to say, this is an opportunity I want to be very well prepared for.

As I’m getting older, I’m realizing that the opportunity to rope for that kind of money with my only son may not be there next year. So, I’m preparing as if this is the last time I will ever have that opportunity. And, when I made that mindset shift, that changed the way I approached my preparation.

To help me prepare, I have been seeking out mentorship from a good friend of mine named Shannon Frascht. Shannon is a past NFR qualifier in team roping, and when it comes to heeling, he knows his stuff. It has been such a fun and rewarding experience for me to be on the other side of a clinic, for a change. Shannon has helped me pick up on the simple things that make such a big difference.

Even when you’ve reached an elite level, you can still benefit from having a mentor, a teacher, or even an accountability partner that can watch you and pick out one or two small things that can fine tune what you are already doing. Never forget how important it is to adopt a growth mindset that says “you can always get better,” even if it's one or two small adjustments.
