Ep 101: How to be More Efficient with Your Time
Do you ever wake up feeling behind? Do you ever get the feeling like you have more to do than you could ever get done? Feeling like you are never caught up? If so, you are not alone.
In the horse training business, time is one of our biggest limitations. I, too, experience seasons of life where I feel like I am never caught up. When I am busy with customer horses or traveling across the country to clinics every weekend, I’ll be the first to say that my personal horses do not get the time and attention they need. Instead of giving those horses what they need, I have only give those horses what I have time for. While these horses are still turning out to be good, I know that I am going to have to devote more time to them to make them great.
I’m sure that many of you have felt this way before, too. In the midst of raising our families and maintaining our careers, sometimes, we fall short on our personal goals with our horses. In times when I feel like there are simply not enough hours in the day, there is one thing that helps me be more efficient with my time. For me, this is seeking out mentorship.
If there is one thing I could change about my past, I would have reached out to more mentors. In today’s world, our access to experts and industry knowledge is at an all time high. If you are struggling with a specific topic, take advantage of the resources you have around you. For the most part, I find that people are more than willing to help you and share their experiences. All you have to do is ask and be willing to learn.
I have many great mentors in my life right now--some that are fellow trainers, and others whom I have never met. This week, I had a great visit from one of my previous assistant trainers. While this person started out learning from me, I now consider this to be someone who is a mentor to me as well.
The key to getting the most out of a mentorship experience is understanding that you can learn something from everyone. Mentorship is an excellent opportunity to be exposed to a new perspective and a new way of doing things. Often times, it is the smallest changes that make the biggest difference.
